1 Person Dead in Airplane Crash Near 5 Freeway in Sylmar

The pilot of a small aircraft died after his plane crashed near the 5 Freeway in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the pilot was found trapped in the wreckage after the small, fixed-wing airplane crashed in a field near the interstate in Sylmar. 

Rescue crews were able to the pull the pilot from the wreckage of the Beechcraft BE33, but he was pronounced dead at the scene the LAFD said. The plane came down at around the Roxford exit under "unknown circumstances" around 1:45 p.m. officials said. 

The crash did not spark a fire, hit any buildings or cause any injuries authorities said. The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the crash.
