LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An off-duty sheriff's deputy was attacked today outside his Boyle Heights home by a knife-wielding man who's being sought, authorities said.

The crime occurred about 5:45 a.m. in the 3400 block of East First Street, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. The male deputy was not in uniform at the time and was headed to work, police said.

The deputy, whose name was withheld, suffered minor injuries, described as cuts and scrapes, and was treated at the scene.

Sheriff's deputies were assisting Los Angeles police officers in a search for the suspect, who was described as an Hispanic man in his 20s, wearing a black hoodie and tan shorts.

"The deputy was exiting his residence on his way to work this morning, and out of nowhere he was attacked by the suspect -- who was armed with a knife -- and he fought,” LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told Fox11. "And it was a pretty `knock-down-drag-out' type fight. Fortunately, he was able to get the best of it, and the suspect fled on foot with that weapon.”

Investigators were unsure if the suspect knew the victim was a sheriff's deputy, Montgomery said.
