A July 19 NBC news article showcased a particular family who has decided to raise their young fraternal twins as gender-less beings who can decide to be whichever gender they so desire.
Zyler and Kadyn, 3, are being raised by their parents, Nate and Julia Sharpe, as "theybies"-children being brought up without gender designation from birth.
“A theyby is, I think, different things to different people,” Nate Sharpe told NBC News. “For us, it means raising our kids with gender-neutral pronouns — so, ‘they,’ ‘them,’ ‘their,’ rather than assigning ‘he,’ ‘she,’ ‘him,’ ‘her’ from birth based on their anatomy.”
The parents do this to seemingly avoid subjecting their kids to gender stereotypes and are determined to shield their children from the realities of a "gender-free state".
However, professor of neuroscience at the Chicago Medical School, Lise Eliot said the confusing upbringing "could be setting your child up for bullying or exclusion.”
