LA Officials Scheduled to Vote on Next Police Chief

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council is scheduled to vote on whether to confirm Mayor Eric Garcetti's choice for the next police chief of the nation's second-largest city.

Garcetti selected Assistant Chief Michel Moore, a 36-year veteran of the Los Angeles police department, to replace Chief Charlie Beck, who is retiring Wednesday after more than 40 years with the LAPD.

Beck has been chief since 2009. The confirmation process for Moore begins with a meeting of the City Council's public safety committee and then a meeting of the full council late Wednesday morning.
