Heartbreaking audio of the tearful cries of migrant children has been released by ProPublica.
The children in the clips are believed to be between 4 and 10 years of age, and are crying because they don't know where their parents are, where they are or even what is happening.
One of the children heard on the recording is a 6-year-old El Salvadoran girl, begging an official to let her call her aunt.
She repeats the number over and over saying:
"My mommy says that I'll go with my aunt, and that she'll come to pick me up there as quickly as possible."
ProPublica says the girl and the rest of the children heard on the audio were at the facility less than 24 hours "so their distress at having been separated from their parents was still raw."
