Adnan Syed, a convicted killer who gained international fame from the podcast "Serial," will finally get a new trial after spending 18 years in prison for a murder he says he did not commit.
The Maryland Court of Special Appeals says that Syed got ineffective assistance by his counsel during his 2000 trial when his defense attorney failed to cross-examine a state cell expert witness on key evidence.
However, the ruling can still be appealed to the state’s highest court, which also means Syed's conviction could be upheld.
The state of Maryland had already appealed the ruling by the lower court to vacate his original conviction.
Since then a new witness has testified that she spoke with Syed in the library of her high school in Baltimore County at the time the state claims he killed Lee.
