Scientist Stephen Hawking Has Passed Away

Stephen Hawking's family has announced he died at his home in Cambridge, England.

His children Lucy, Robert and Tim have issued a statement: "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.' We will miss him forever."

Although he has lived with a rare form of ALS since he was 21 which left him paralyzed, the specific cause of death has not been shared. He had to communicate with a special device he could control with his cheek, but that didn't seem to slow him down. He published groundbreaking works on theoretical physics. The most well-known are his international bestsellers "A Brief History of Time" and "The Universe in a Nutshell." 

Eddie Redmayne won an Oscar for is portrayal of Hawking in the 2014 film "The Theory of Everything."
