SI is Slammed for Attempting to Frame Swimsuit Issue as Empowering

Sports Illustrated releases their annual Swimsuit Edition to the...uh... delight of many.

However, this year's issue isn't as delightful to the National Center on Sexual Exploitation who say the magazine is contributing to sexual objectification.

The center's executive director Dawn Hawkins says the magazine's take on the #MeToo movement  is only fueling sexual harassment and assault.

“The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition tells women and girls of all ages that no matter how many years, or how much blood, sweat, and tears you put into reaching the pinnacle of athleticism, your value as a human being still ultimately hinges on your sex appeal."

The 2018 issue features the "In Her Own Words" project that features models and athletes baring all while painted with words that resonate with them.

One of whom is Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, a survivor of sexual abuse who says she found the shoot to be liberating.
