Mirai Nagasu is First US Woman to Land Triple Axel at Olympics

US figure skater Mirai Nagasu has become the first American woman to land a triple axel in the Olympics.

The historical feat came 21 seconds into her routine and at the end she received a standing ovation from the crowd at the end of her performance.

Nagasu originally finished fourth during the 2010 Olympics and was bumped from the team for the 2014 games in favor of Ashley Wagner by a federation committee.

Her fellow teammate, Adam Rippon was left off the roster in 2010 and like Nagasu he delivered an incredible perfomance landing both triple axels in his routine.

"I just remember four years ago, Mirai and I were in a dark place. Honestly, we were depressed that we weren't at the [Olympics].

I told her as we were going through that, Mirai, I'm so lucky to have you by my side. We're going to get through this together."

Although Canada took home the gold for the team skate, team USA came in with the bronze behind the Olympic Athletes from Russia.
