The mother of 13 malnourished adult and minor children was reportedly confused as to why Riverside County Sheriffs showed up to her house.

Sheriffs found the starving children of David Allen Turpin and Louise Anna Turpin chained to furniture after responding to the 911 call of the couple's 17-year-old daughter who managed to escape.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department Perris Station commander Greg Fellows said:

"The mother was perplexed as to why we were at that residence."

The 17-year-old daughter called 911 from a deactivated cellphone after escaping through a window. She showed pictures to deputies of how filthy the home was and that led them to do a welfare check on the family.

Once the saw the disgusting conditions and that 3 of the malnourished children were chained to furniture, they arrested the Turpin couple.
