Big percentage of federal inmates are illegal aliens

According to a new report published by the Trump administration, 92% of foreign nationals in federal prison are illegal aliens, giving us yet another reason for the U.S. to follow through on the President's proposed immigration reform.

The report from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security found that more than 1 in 5 people imprisoned were not born in the United States. To add to that, 94% of foreign nationals either in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons or the U.S. Marshals Service came into the country illegally.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement that Americans “are being victimized by illegal aliens who commit crimes. … The simple fact is that any offense committed by a criminal alien is ultimately preventable. One victim is too many.”

At the end of the 2017 fiscal year, the report found 58,766 known or suspect foreign nationals were put into United States prisons.

The report did not have any information on incarcerations in state or local jails:

“State and local facilities do not routinely provide DHS or DOJ with comprehensive information about their inmates and detainees—which account for approximately 90 percent of the total U.S. incarcerated population."
