Man shot after hitting off-duty Los Angeles officer in head

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police say a man was shot after striking an off-duty officer in the head with a metal bat or flashlight.

Police say two off-duty officers confronted a man in North Hills early Wednesday morning before the man hit one of them in the head.

At least one of the officers opened fire, shooting the suspect in the stomach.

Det. Meghan Aguilar said the suspect was in surgery and his condition wasn't known. The officer was treated at the hospital and released.

Aguilar says detectives don't know what prompted the confrontation.

Police were also investigating an unrelated incident about 1 mile (1.61 kilometer) away where others officers shot at a man who was carrying a rifle near a motel. No one was injured and the suspect was arrested.
