Hurricane-Force Winds Exacerbate Wildfire Situation In Southern Californi

Wildfires in Southern California are expected to worsen due to hurricane-force winds.  The color-coded system that reflects the strength of winds in the area has reached "purple," a rating that has never been used before.  Forecasters say the winds could hit 80 miles an hour, reversing any progress firefighters have made in containing the blazes.  There are at least four separate fires burning throughout Ventura and Los Angeles county.

The fires have led to the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people and the largest fire, The Thomas Fire, has burned more than 96,000 acres.  The smallest is the Skirball Fire, but it's burning near heavily populated areas of Los Angeles, including expensive neighborhoods close to Beverly Hills.
