15-Year-Old Suspected of Setting Fire to Home After Fight With Mom

Police say a 15-year-old boy is suspected of setting his house on fire after he got into a verbal altercation with his mother.

Fire officials in Pico Rivera say the mother and another person in the home were able to escape the house unhurt Sunday evening. Crews were able to put out the fire while police set up a perimeter to search for the teen.

The boy returned to the scene three hours later and surrendered to police.

The Whittier Daily News says the teen is suspected to have dumped gasoline around the exterior of the house, before igniting it.

According to witnesses, the woman is a single-mom and seamstress who works out of her home.

The fire caused approximated $70,000 worth of damage to the home and its contents, but was still deemed inhabitable by officials.
