Miami College Football Fan Gets Punched after Slapping a Cop

This weekend’s University of Miami Hurricanes game is going viral online, and not for the reason you’d expect.

Police say 30-year-old football fan, Bridget Freitas, was so drunk and disorderly that when police tried to haul her out of the stands, she managed to smack one of the cops in the face on the way out.

But why is this going viral? Well, the cop wasn’t having any of it, and responded with a muscle- filled punch to the head.

NBC reports that Freitas was arguing with other fans and was "using profanity in a loud, boisterous manner" when the officers arrived. The officers said they tried to calm her down and asked her to move to the concourse, but she refused and sat on the steps.

Freitas is currently facing a felony battery charge and a misdemeanor for disorderly conduct.

Miami-Dade Police say they're investigating the video to decide whether the officer broke policy by punching Freitas.

“After responding to a disturbance, the person in the video was being removed from the event by our officers for being disorderly," the department says in a statement. "She was subsequently arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct/breach of the peace. Supervisory personnel are aware of the video and are reviewing the incident to ensure compliance with our policies and procedures.”

The police union, on the other hand, defended the officer. “All he did was react to her actions,” John Rivera, head of Miami-Dade's Police Benevolent Association, told the Miami Herald.

By Sunday afternoon, the video had been shared on Twitter more than 3,000 times and was trending on various media sites.

University of Miami officials said they were aware of the video and were also gathering information and are conducting their own investigation.

In a recent case in South Florida, a Miami Beach cop was caught on camera hitting and kicking a handcuffed woman who had taken a swing at him. In that case, the officer ended up suspended for 160 hours.
