U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis says Washington's goal is not war with North Korea. Mattis visited the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea today, where he was briefed by the South Korean Defense Minister. In the DMZ, Mattis called North Korea an oppressive regime that shackles its people in pursuit of nuclear weapons, in order to threaten others with catastrophe. He said Washington's goal is not war but rather the "denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula.
His visit is seen as paving the way for an official visit by President Donald Trump in 1 week.
