LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a man lost his legs after he was struck by a rail train in Los Angeles.

KCBS-TV reports Los Angeles Police Department Officer Rosario Herrera says the incident took place just after 2 p.m. Sunday in Chinatown.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart says the man was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

A Los Angeles Police Department desk officer says it is unclear if the man was trying to kill himself or whether he was involved in an accident.

Metrolink spokesman Chris Gutierrez says the train that hit the man was leaving its maintenance yard and headed for Union Station.

Gutierrez says Metrolink is cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation of the accident.             ___
