Deputy Critical After Off-Duty Crash in La Habra

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy has been struggling to recover from an off-duty traffic collision in La Habra, in which the top of the deputy’s pickup truck was crushed after passing underneath a big rig trailer.

The crash September 21 was recorded on a nearby business’s security camera.

The video shows the tractor trailer slowly pulling into the intersection of Whittier Blvd. and Cyprus St. on a green light around 5:30 a.m.

As the truck driver prepared to make a left turn, headlights from the deputy’s pickup appear - then the deputy's truck collided with the trailer and passed underneath.

The impact crushed the roof of the cab of the deputy’s 2017 Toyota Tacoma, and the deputy suffered extremely critical injuries.

The camera that recorded the impact was installed at JL Motorworks in La Habra because of a series of crashes in the same intersection.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to the La Habra Police Department, and a department spokesman said alcohol has not been ruled out as a contributing factor.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said the injured deputy is assigned to the Norwalk Station as a training officer, and has been employed as a deputy for about 10 years.

The deputy had just attended an, “appreciation barbecue,” at the Norwalk Station the afternoon before the crash.
