Couple's hot air balloon blown away during marriage proposal

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Almost everything went according to plan when Gavin Lodge proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Katrina Smith.

KNSD-TV reports Lodge took Smith on a hot air balloon ride on Saturday, during  which he planned to ask her to marry him. After Smith said yes, the Scripps Ranch couple planned to land in Carmel Valley, but winds prevented them from landing for about an hour.

The hot air balloon flew close to homes and seemed it would skim the roofs, before it was able to land in an empty park in San Diego.

Lodge, Smith and the pilot made it out of the balloon safely.

Lodge says their engagement was memorable despite the unexpected landing complications.
