USGS: Major Earthquake Will Hit California's Bay Area Within 30 Years

In the wake of Tuesday's devastating magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Mexico, officials with the U.S. Geological Survey warn that there is a 98 percent chance that a big one will shake California's Bay Area within the next 30 years.

Geologists tell "NBC Bay Area" that the quake will be a 6.0 magnitude or bigger and will happen anytime from now until 2047.  Early warning technology is being worked on in California, Oregon, and Washington, but is only about half ready and still in the testing phase.  The technology known as Shake Alert would provide a few seconds to a minute of warning.
