Marines Plan to Allow Women in West Coast Combat Training

The US Marine Corps is eyeing a plan that would allow women to attend what has been traditionally a male only combat training session in Southern California.

Marine Corps officials say they are working to end recurring problems with sexism and other bad behaviors among Marines.

Leaders are also considering allowing women to attend boot camp in San Diego instead of their normal boot camp at Perris Island, South Carolina.

Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Glenn Walters says leaders want to go after any "unconcious bias" that may exist in the Corps.

“If we’re going to change the culture of the Marine Corps, we need to change how we’re organized. Our recruit training is a component of that.”

If approved, the change could happen as soon as Spring 2018 and would be the first step in giving male marines an opportunity to work with female marines earlier in their career.
