A civil rights lawsuit is trying to protect homeless people’s stuff in Santa Ana. Hundreds of people live in a mini tent city at the Civic Center. Lawyer Brooke Weitzman says city officials have been hauling away people’s property at least once a week.

"Either because people are being told that they have too much and need to give up some property, or because the property is unattended and has been determined to be seized at that time."

She says that doesn’t allow people to leave for a job or a doctor’s appointment. The lawsuit is trying to force the city to change its cleanup policy.
