Military Plane Crash Kills 16 Marines in Mississippi

A Marine Corps transport plane crashed in a field in rural Mississippi, killing the 16 servicemembers on board.

The aircraft, a KC-130, is used to refuel planes while in air as well as carrying cargo.

When the aircraft disappeared from traffic control radar, officials from the Federal Aviation Administration tried to contact the Marines on board.

The Marines say the flight originated from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in eastern North Carolina.

The cause of the crash isn't immediately known nor have the service members' names been released.

"While the details of the incident are being investigated, our focus remains on providing the necessary resources and support to the family and friends of these service members as they go through this extremely difficult time."

Politicians and civilians alike took to social media to share their condolences.
