Kayakers can hop into the LA River beginning Memorial Day

Kayaking season will kick off Memorial Day at the LA River. Kayaking will be allowed through Labor Day weekend in the Elysian Valley and the Sepulveda Basin. LA Councilman Mitch O'Farrell says he's kayaked the river for five years. He has some tips for newbies such as always wear sunblock.

He said the river will be open for the three summer months and they will re-evaluate at the end of the summer to see if they can keep it open.

Fishing is allowed year-round with a permit. A ranger tells KFI News it is safe to eat fish from the LA River, but admitted he's never tried it.
