Airline CEO takes pie in the face during speech

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce was speaking in Perth, Australia yesterday when a man walked onstage and slammed his face with a lemon meringue pie.

He just hit him with a pie, he didn't follow it up with a seltzer splash.

Joyce left the stage briefly to clean himself off and get a new jacket, and then returned to continue his talk.

He said:

“This is certainly an unusual event, but things like this have happened in the past."

The pieman was identified as Tony Overheu, a one-time candidate for the conservative Nationals party.

It's still not clear why Joyce was targeted, but he's been under fire in the past for treatment of workers and more recently for for his vocal support of gay marriage.

Pie slammer Tony Overheu is a senior member of a local church.
