Apple's self-driving cars could be on the roads in California and the rest of the country sooner than you think. The technology firm has received permits from the State Department to test self-driving cars, joining other tech companies, small start-ups and traditional automakers in the race to build a fully automated vehicle.
Apple has been recruiting auto experts over the last few years in a not-so-secret bid to build a self-driving car. The vehicles that are being permitted are all Lexus RX450hs according to the DMV.
Other companies who have been issued similar permits include; Alphabet's Google, Volkswagen, Ford, General Motors, and Tesla.
Companies are aiming for a 2020 launch date for self-driving cars, however, it could take much longer thanks to regulatory challenges.
