Be Kind To Each Other

When you're convinced that the world is just a horrible place and you've lost all faith in humanity, take a moment to meet Joe Thomas.

Joe works at an iHop in Springfield, Illinois.  He's been an employee there for more than 11 years and he loves his job.

He knows his regular customers by name and their orders by heart, but it was a moment caught in a photo by customer Keisha Dotson recently that has made the world aware of how awesome he is.

The photo shows Joe helping one of his regular customers, who has Huntington Disease, eat.

This simple act took the internet by storm.

Joe says that the couple have been coming in once a week for as long as he can remember.   He said he used to see her husband wait to eat his food while he helped his wife eat hers.  So by the time he got to eat his, it was cold.

Joe said one day, he wanted to change that so the husband could enjoy his meal while it was still hot.

Joe told CBS News:

"I didn't really offer. I just started doing it.  I told the gentleman to 'Sit down, eat your food. I got her."

The husband was grateful for the help and that has been their routine ever since.

Joe's co-workers says there's nothing new here, Joe always helps his guests, it just so happened that this time, someone took a picture.

Joe says he really doesn't understand all the sudden attention, but he hopes it inspires people to do something nice for someone else.  He told CBS News:

"I treat people like I want to be treated. If I get to be that age and something happened to me I would want someone to help me out.  Everything I do is honestly just natural, besides the way my parents raise me.  I don't think about it. I just do it.  Remember that movie, 'Pay it Forward'? That's what I'm hoping for."
