8 hikers rescued from Southern California's Mecca Hills

THERMAL, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities rescued eight hikers who became lost during the weekend in the Mecca Hills Wilderness southeast of Coachella Valley.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says two hikers from Fontana called 911 around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies from the Thermal sheriff's station and a California Highway Patrol helicopter responded. The helicopter crew located the hikers and was able to land and rescue them.

Shortly after 7 p.m., deputies and a helicopter again responded to a 911 call in the Ladder Canyon area of the Mecca Hills. The helicopter rescued six adult hikers, all from Running Springs.
