Woman accused of leaving child in store pleads not guilty

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Bail has been set at $10,000 for a Southern California woman accused of abandoning her 2-year-old daughter at a grocery store.

Chiengkham "Cindy" Vilaysane pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony desertion of a child younger than 14 and misdemeanor child endangerment.

The Press-Enterprise newspaper reports the judge denied a request by her attorneys to reduce or eliminate her bail. She's due back in court March 29.

A police statement said the 31-year-old Riverside resident entered a Food-4-Less store March 12 with a toddler who wandered off.

The mother continued to shop and when a good Samaritan brought the child to her she was reported to have responded, "Oh just leave her."

Police say the mother deserted the toddler after paying for the groceries.

The child is in protective custody.
