On Sunday night’s episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver traveled to Tibet to pick the brain of the Dalai Lama.
“A man so woke, he’s basically the original ‘Woke Bae’,” says Oliver.
The odd couple discussed a variety of topics: from China’s perspective of the religious leader, to the uncertain future of the reincarnated leader.
The Dalai Lama is historically unpopular to the Chinese government and invaded the region in an effort to oust him. Civilians in support of the Dalai Lama have turned to self-immolation to demonstrate their allegiance, which has often done more harm than good.
There’s also trouble in paradise since the Chinese government had kidnapped the next Panchen Lama, the person responsible for selecting the next Dalai Lama. Check out Oliver’s entire interview with His Holiness below.
