Orange County mayors who are trying to get a handle on the homeless problem are still looking for potential sites for an emergency homeless shelter, but one location has stood out in discussions among them.
A former elementary school owned by the county is being discussed as a potential location for an emergency homeless shelter. The property used to host Silverado Elementary School, but has been operating as a county library since last July. The unincorperated Silverado community is located in the hills east of Irvine and Tustin.
Irvine Mayor Don Wagner posted a video address to the community saying that while the property has its limitations, it would be the best viable option that has lots of space available.
Two other sites have been discussed by Orange County mayors including the Library of the Canyons, and the Los Pinos Conservation Camp.
If the Silverado location is chosen, the library would close and the building would be filled with cots to house the homeless.
Thursday's meeting didn't solve anything, but Aliso Viejo Mayor Dave Harrington told the Orange County Register that he believes the county is finally moving in the right direction.
“It was good that we got together. We understand the issue better as a group, and we discussed what we should do moving forward.”
