Man convicted of California baby kidnap-killing

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man has been convicted of killing a 3-week-old baby in a bizarre child-stealing scheme.

City News Service says Anthony McCall was convicted Friday.

Prosecutors say he snatched Eliza De La Cruz from her mother's arms in 2015 in Long Beach after she was followed home from a bus stop.

Authorities say he shot the infant's parents and uncle with a gun using silencers made from potatoes. They survived.

Investigators say McCall stole the child because his friend needed a newborn after falsely telling her married boyfriend she'd had twins.

After the kidnapping hit the news, the baby was thrown away in a plastic trash bag and suffocated.

A later child-stealing attempt from another woman failed.

McCall's friend, Giseleangelique D'Milian, is serving 25 years to life for murder.
