Los Angeles authorities say a suspect was killed and an officer was wounded during an exchange of gunfire following a high-speed vehicle chase during which police were fired upon several times.

Police Deputy Chief Bob Green says officers started pursuing a gray SUV that was driving recklessly south of downtown at around 2:20 a.m. Monday.

Green says two occupants of the SUV started firing shots at the officers. Following a chase on the 110 Freeway and on surface streets, the SUV crashed and two suspects ran off.

One suspect was found hiding in a dumpster and arrested.

At around 5 a.m. the second suspect engaged officers with a rifle, and officers returned fire. One officer is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Officials say the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
