LA County rejects sheriff's civilian panel

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County has rejected a proposal to create a civilian review board for the Sheriff's Department.

City News Service says the Board of Supervisors rejected the idea Tuesday by a 3-2 vote.

The proposed oversight commission would have only an advisory role — unlike the civilian commission that has authority over the Los Angeles Police Department.

But backers argued it would give community members a voice.

The nation's largest sheriff's department has been rocked by allegations of jail abuses and controversial shootings.

However, supervisors argued that an inspector general appointed by the board in December should have a chance to do his job and they laid out plans to give him more authority.
