Dean Alan Sharp, a native of Southern California, first began integrating his artistic creativity with his passion for residential architecture while working as a young carpenter in Bel Air; then as a Project Manager in Beverly Hills; and ultimately as a Design Director, creating luxury estates in exclusive West Los Angeles neighborhoods from the Hollywood Hills to Malibu. In an age of fast-food and fast-homes he counts himself blessed to have participated in scores of ultra-custom projects where creativity was highly valued and old-world craftsmanship allowed to find it fullest expression.
Yet, despite the pleasure and prestige of creating elite homes, his heart always drew him back to his working-class roots where he began applying the “tricks” of mansion building to suburbia. He found it an even greater creative challenge to give mass-produced, cookie-cutter houses a unique style, story, and soul of their own in ways that everyday folks could afford. Or as he likes to say, “creativity over cost.”
The House Whisperer is not a contractor, he’s a gifted home designer with the hands on experience of a master builder. In the early 1990s he briefly owned a successful design/build contracting company which was unfortunately forced to close due to financial hardship amidst a difficult divorce. It was a challenging time, but it offered Dean an opportunity to return to his roots of artistry as a designer and a craftsman.
“I came to realize what I wanted more than anything was to pour my heart into design, still get my hands dirty on occasion, and leave the paperwork to others.”
Dean considers the secret of his undaunted success to be a commitment to honesty, transparency, childlike wonder, a passion for life and an insatiable curiosity for pretty much everything. He also possesses a notably warm and calming disposition which serves to instill confidence in his clients even as his creativity may be carrying them beyond their comfort zones.
Dean “whispers” houses all throughout Southern California and sometimes even across the country, but he spends most of his time happily at play in his own mind right here in Ventura County with his soul-mate, Tina, where they do their part to save the world as well as savor the world in a little house and a big life that regularly overflows with good friends, good food, good dogs, some chickens, some bees, and a whole lotta love.
