This week, Netflix slapped ABC so hard, that Mickey Mouse is still trying to figure out what hit him.
They announced a multi-year deal, rumored to be more than $100 million, with one of ABC’s (and the industry’s) top talents, Shonda Rhimes, and her production company ShondaLand to produce original series and projects for Netflix exclusively.
Shonda created some of ABC's most popular shows.
- Grey’s Anatomy
- How To Get Away With Murder
So it's safe to say that for the last 10 years, ABC has HEAVILY relied on her shows to fill out their prime-time schedules and bring in big ratings and a lot of money.
So this is a HUGE loss for them, especially since ABC just announced a streaming service that will compete directly with Netflix. It’s also a sign to other networks that Netflix and other companies like Amazon are in it to play hard ball and steal their talent when it comes to creating their own original programming.
In a statement about the Netflix deal Rhimes said:
“Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company.
Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. They understand what I’m looking for, the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation.
