One person is dead and a gunman is in critical condition at the end of a hostage standoff at downtown Charleston, South Carolina. A man described as a disgruntled employee killed a person at a restaurant there and took hostages.
The situation drew a heavy response from police, including a SWAT team and a bomb disposal squad. Hours later, someone was taken away from the scene on a stretcher. Police didn't explain what the motive in the crime might have been.
