A disbarred lawyer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after he was convicted of kidnapping a woman from her home in San Francisco.
Matthew Muller plead guilty to the charges in September for the abduction of Denise Huskins.
Prosecutors say Huskins and her live in boyfriend Aaron Quinn, were being spied on for days by Muller via a remote controlled drone.
They said Muller broke into their Vallejo home, tied the couple up and made them drink a drug that would make them sleepy, blindfolded them and then played a message he pre-recorded to make them think there were more kidnappers in the room.
Muller then put Huskins in the trunk of his car, and held her in his South Lake Tahoe home for two days before releasing her in her hometown of Huntington Beach.
Once the story broke about Huskins' kidnapping and release, few people believed her including the Vallejo police who called the event a hoax.
They even went as far as comparing it to the story of "Gone Girl" where a woman goes missing, then lies about being the victim of a kidnapping when she reappears.
While in court, Muller says he was "sick with shame" for what he did to Huskins and showed little to no emotion as he was being sentenced.
Quinn's mother, Marianne says he deserved more than the 40 years he got.
“He doesn’t have empathy. I don’t think he’s capable of it.”
Muller's attorney Thomas Johnson fought for a lesser sentence of 30 years saying Muller had serious mental issues and could be rehabilitated with the proper care.
He told the judge:
“They want him to be a monster to get to 40 years. Fine. Marginalize mental illness.”
The police who didn't believe Huskins have since apologized for their hoax comments and Huskins is suing the city and two officers citing defamation and infliction of emotional distress.
