LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tourists who witnessed a terrifying auto rampage along a crowded Venice Beach boardwalk said the driver seemed to be aiming for people.

The witnesses testified at a preliminary hearing Tuesday for 38-year-old Nathan Louis Campbell, who faces charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and hit-and-run for the August incident.

A woman from England says she was hit by a car and suffered minor injuries on her legs, but saw others more gravely injured. She and her boyfriend tried to flee but when she turned she said the car swerved and aimed at her.

Witnesses from Indiana and Pennsylvania said Campbell appeared focused as he plowed into the crowd.

The aunt of an Italian woman killed while on her honeymoon sat in the courtroom's back row listening to testimony.
