Riverside Co. Water Supplier Offers Thousands in Refunds

PERRIS (CNS) - The Eastern Municipal Water District is seeking to return more than $60,000 to dozens of customers that the Riverside County water supplier is having trouble locating.

The Perris-based Eastern Municipal Water District has published the  names of around 750 individuals and businesses owed anywhere from 13 cents to  $5,000 in refunds.

According to the utility, which serves a 540-square-mile area extending along the Interstate 215 corridor from Moreno Valley to Temecula, the funds consist of deposits that developers made ahead of projects that have since been completed, as well as water efficiency rebates owed to residents and accounts that customers overpaid and later closed.

“The EMWD attempts to locate the current address and contact these customers and developers, but those efforts are sometimes unsuccessful,” according to an agency statement.

State law requires entities to retain unclaimed monies for at least three years before the funds become the property of the holder. The water district said its board of directors will vote on Jan. 22 whether to convert the funds, which all go back to 2010, to general fund revenue.
