The light bulb ban takes effect next year.

Light bulb manufacturers will stop making the traditional 40- and 60-watt bulbs in January. Those are most popular kinds of light bulbs in America.

Halogen, CFL, LED and high-efficiency incandescents cost more than old-fashioned bulbs, but proponents of energy saving lights say they last a lot longer, so people save money in the long term.

Some Tea Party conservatives point to the new light bulb law as another example of President Obama's government overreach, but the regulations were signed into law by President Bush in 2007.
