LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles City Council voted today to ban the  use of Segways and other similar personal vehicles or scooters on the Venice  Beach boardwalk.

The ban, approved 14-0 and now awaiting the mayor's signature, would  apply to Ocean Front Walk between Santa Monica and Washington Boulevard.

The ordinance makes an exceptions for people physical disabilities and  would allow Segways and similar vehicles on the Venice bike path and other bike  paths.

The ban was proposed in response to an increase in accidents involving  Segways -- two-wheeled, battery-powered electric vehicles -- and pedestrians on  the boardwalk.

Bicycles are not allowed on Ocean Front Walk, but Segways are. Some of  the accidents involved children and seniors, according to City Councilman Mike  Bonin, who proposed the ban.
