An Arcadia firefighter who went missing during a hiking  trip in a rugged Ventura County wilderness area north of Fillmore was found dead today.

Mike Herdman, 36, went missing June 13 while on a hiking trip in the Los  Padres National Forest with a fellow firefighter. Herdman was last seen  chasing his dog, Duke, into the Sespe Wilderness.

He was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts when he disappeared.

His hiking partner made his way back to a trailhead on June 15 and  alerted authorities, beginning a massive search effort that included teams from  the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, and sheriff's teams from Los Angeles,  Orange, Kern and San Luis Obispo counties. A Homeland Security Rapid Response  Team also took part in the search, along with volunteers from the Los Angeles  Animal Services Department, which assisted after crews twice spotted Duke but  were unable to catch him.

Duke was eventually corralled Sunday, but there was still no sign of  Herdman, and the search was dramatically scaled back. At its height, the search  spanned 50 square miles.
