Anaheim PD K-9 officer to be retired

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Anaheim authorities say a police dog shot by a suspect who also fired on officers will be retired after recovering from his wounds.

Lt. Tim Schmidt tells the Orange County Register it could take at least a year for Bruno to fully recover from surgery to reconstruct his jaw and remove a bullet lodged in his chest.

The dog was wounded last Thursday. After Robert Moreno Jr. fired on probation officers, the 7-year-old German shepherd found the suspect in an apartment-complex courtyard, and the man shot the dog twice. Police then shot the 21-year-old Moreno, who died at the scene.

Schmidt described Bruno's actions during the shootout as heroic.

Bruno will continue to be cared for by his handler, Officer R.J. Young, after being retired.
