SOUTH EL MONTE (CNS) - A helicopter with a fuel leak made a forced landing on parkland near South El Monte today, injuring two persons onboard and prompting a hazmat cleanup.
The hard landing was at about 9:30 a.m. in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area of South El Monte.
The chopper reportedly set down after the pilot noticed a fuel leak.
Paramedics took two people from the helicopter to an area hospital, a county fire dispatcher said.
A Los Angeles County health hazmat crew was sent to the south end of Potero Avenue, near the tennis courts at Shively Park, inside the large, dry flood control basin upstream from the Whittier Narrows Dam.
Fuel from the chopper's 100-gallon container tanks spilled onto the ground, but no fire was reported.
